Students at SMP Al Islam were introduced to the concept of Interactive Fiction through TWINE, an innovative storytelling tool, through hands-on-activity. The session included an explanation of the purpose of the program and how students could engage with it.
On August 10, 2024, the students presented interactive fiction narratives they had read. They were introduced to the key elements of fiction-building, including structure and plot. As a challenge, students were challenged with writing their own interactive fiction in Bahasa Indonesia.
On August 24, 2024, the students presented the interactive fiction they had written. They were introduced to the key elements of interactive fiction and challenged to develop branching narrative fiction as part of their creative writing process.
The students presented their branching narratives and participated in a fun Kahoot! quiz. After group discussions, three groups shared their interactive story frameworks. The MBKM team introduced basic Twine programming, and students were assigned to create their own interactive fiction at home.
The students worked in groups to write narratives in Twine. The MBKM team introduced how to insert images, sounds, and videos into Twine stories. After a hands-on coding session, students successfully added multimedia elements to their interactive fiction projects.
The students attended an online session via Google Meet, where they consulted with the MBKM teaching team about their Twine projects. To help with coding, a cheat sheet was shared and used by the students. Despite the online format, the students remained engaged, actively reporting their progress and asking questions.
Conducted online through Google Meet, the students reported progress on their interactive fiction projects, with some showing significant improvement. Many asked how to incorporate elements like images, music, and videos into Twine. The MBKM teaching team guided the students through the coding process to add these elements to their works.
The students submitted their final interactive fiction projects. Three outstanding works were selected for presentation: Catty World, The Secret Mystery, and Instant Noodle. The MBKM teaching team also showcased their work, The Ant and The Dove.
As a reward for completing their interactive fiction projects on Twine, the students were presented with various English novels. This action aims to inspire the students to develop their English reading skills and creativity. The students expressed great enthusiasm when they received the books. This will help them broaden their vocabulary, cultural understanding, and passion for literacy.
The MBKM teaching team had a two-way discussion with the Aksis journalism team of SMP Al Islam and resulted in planning a digital English magazine. Students translated sections of the Indonesian version of Aksis’s newest edition magazine supervised by the MBKM teaching team.
In this online meeting, students from the Aksis journalism team reported their progress on translating the digital magazine. The translated drafts were submitted to be reviewed and revised by the MBKM teaching team.
The MBKM teaching team handed out English classic novels as part of the literacy programme. Then, students were encouraged to express their impression and message for the project. Students were happy that they could learn new various ways of writing stories and are encouraged to write more.
